Session 1 of TEFL Program in China

Written in China:

I’m writing this on July 23, 2019 but likely won’t be able to post until later as my internet isn’t very good. I also won’t be finishing the post tonight because I have so much to write but I feel like it’s important to say when I started writing for context or something.

I have now been in China for almost 3 weeks, it has been quite a different experience than any other traveling I have previously done. I am not able to use internet like normal, having to use a VPN to access most of the apps and websites I would normally use in the US. Not only that but the WiFi is in and out all the time, my room doesn’t have working Wifi but the hallway and the classrooms do, it’s not ideal but it works. The food is also very different from what I am used to and what I would like, there are more foods that I enjoy than expected but it is still very hard for me to try so many new things all the time. I live on the school campus where I am teaching, and we get food at a cafeteria in buffet style so while I get to choose how much food I want and what food I want, it is always different things and I am always forced to take risks and try new things. Trying all the new foods is good and I have found foods that I really like that I never would have ordered for myself but there are also meals where I don’t eat much more than rice because I don’t like the other options. There is always rice though so that is good. There is a tomato and egg soup kind of dish that is sweet and really good, I also really like some of the vegetable dishes but I have no clue what is even in them. I probably would be less interested in trying some of the food if I knew exactly what it was so it’s good that I don’t know and I just must taste it and see how it is.

Since there are times when I don’t like any of the food, I have been spending way too much money on vending machine snacks on campus and at the convenience store but I would rather be spending my money on food than other random nonsense so it’s okay.

Moving on from food and Wi-Fi, what I am really here for is teaching English. I have taught one session so far and we are currently on the 3rd day of session two. There are three sessions all together and we have breaks in between each session where we can travel and see China. The first session of camp was really good and I loved all of the kids so much. There were about 35 kids in the session and they were broken up into 5 different classes based on their age and skill level. As teachers, we have been assigned a home room class that we work with for ice breakers and talent show rehearsals, while we teach all of the classes an English class that centers around a specific subject. I am paired with my roommate Catriona and we teach a history class. We chose history because Catriona is studying history at Trinity College in Dublin and a part of my degree at CSU was history based and I like history. The other teachers each got to pick what they would teach their classes about so there is a geography class taught by Alfie (a Maths major) and Harry (a history major) who both go to Oxford, a literature class taught by Maria and Pete who are both English majors at Oxford, a biology/health class taught by Dan (a biochem major at Oxford) and Taylor (a biomedical major at Durham), and then Alex (an English Language and Linguistics major at York) and Max (a premed student at the University of Illinois) teach a conversation class.

Day 1 in China

The first day after arriving in China was spent on campus without the kids, we met with the director and learned about what we would be doing during the program, we were sent off to make lesson plans and decide on what we would do for our chosen course, an elective we would also be teaching 4 times a week. As a group, we decided on 4 different electives or chosen courses for the kids to choose from, a PE class taught by Me, Max and Harry, a drama class taught by Alex, Pete and Catriona, a Zumba class taught by Taylor and Dan and finally a music class with Maria and Alfie. After we decided on our classes and chosen courses we got a tour around the school. We saw most of the buildings, the auditoriums, music and dance rooms, the gym, pool, track and field, and the dorms and classrooms. We hung out and got to know each other a bit while working on lesson plans until it was time to meet our TAs for that session. We headed back to a classroom and were introduced with the TA we would be working with; they were mostly girls with only two guys. Me and Catriona were paired with a boy named William, he was very good at English and was only 16 years old! After meeting who we would be paired with we all went to the mall together on the bus, about 30 minutes away to get dinner together. The mall was pretty similar to a mall you would see in America or Europe so it wasn’t really that different but the restaurant we went to was a different experience for sure. They served a thing called Hot Box, you had to pick two different broths which they then put in a big pot, the pot was split into three sections so one section got your first broth choice, the middle got a plain broth and the last section got the second broth choice, it sits on the table on a stove top to heat and cook it. You are then able to choose meats, noodles and vegetable to add the different broths. They bring out all the meats raw and the noodles uncooked, there is then a veggie station where you can pick which veggies you want to add. So, we were able to cook all kinds of veggies, meats and noodles in the two broths we picked. Some of the meats and veggies were a little weird and I didn’t like them all but I tried a lot of new things so that was really good. The best part of the dinner though was being able to talk to all the teachers and the TAs, we got to know each other and bond a little before we started teaching.

Day 2 in China, Day 1 of Camp

The next day was the first actual day of camp where we got to meet all our students. The opening ceremony was the first thing in the morning at 9:45am, we all gathered in the smaller auditorium and waited for the kids and parents to arrive. The director gave a speech, some of the TAs introduced themselves and the other teaching assistant, a student gave a speech in Chinese and then it was our turn to introduce ourselves. We each had to go on stage and introduce ourselves, we said where we went to school, where we are from and the classes we would be teaching. The final part of the ceremony was one of the students waving a Chinese flag on stage. Then it was finally time to break into our classes and get to know the kids. Catriona and I were placed with class 1 so the lowest level of English and the youngest kids. We had 8 kids in our class and they all got to choose their English names if they didn’t already have one, we had a few kids with interesting names like Nice and 19 but the others all had fairly normal names like Bob and Amy.

We had about two hours to get to know our kids and play ice breaker games.

After ice breakers was lunch, as I said in the beginning it is a buffet style with various dishes and options but I never really know what it is but it, was not too bad. After lunch the kids had a school tour but we didn’t so we had an extra-long break, nothing scheduled until 2:45. At 2:45 we had to present our chosen courses to the kids so they could decide which one they would want to do for the week. The majority of the kids ended up wanting to choose PE but because we had to make sure the other classes had kids too we limited the class to 10 kids. Drama and Zumba ended up with about 10 each as well while music only had 3 kids. For the first day, of chosen course we went outside, it was really hot but not unbearable. We played capture the flag, blog tag and a few other tag games, the kids seemed to enjoy all of the games and were excited for the next day of chosen course. In order to actually play the games, we had to have a TA, a Chinese student who spoke English fairly well, translate the rules. It usually took a little while for the TA to understand the game themselves but once they did it was smooth sailing and all the kids were excited to play. In PE, we had two girls, both from my home room, Shawn and 19 and 8 boys two were from my home room Bob, a little ninja who was doing flips and handsprings any chance he got, and Nice, a very energetic kid with lots to say. The other kids in my homeroom chose other courses. In my homeroom class, we had Douglas, Amy, Sam, and Vera in addition to Shawn, 19, Bob and Nice.

After chosen course was dinner and talent show rehearsal for the kids. We had the evening free but spent it working on planning our lessons for the week.

Day 3 in China, Day 2 of Camp

The next day Catriona and I had to lead morning exercise. We weren’t sure what to expect and it turned out that no one, not even the director, really knew what morning exercise was meant to be so we just had the kids to a bunch of different stretches and jumping around to get them woken up and ready for classes. We woke up at 7:30 ate breakfast, had morning exercise at 8:25 until 8:45 and then class started at 8:50.

For our first lesson, we decided to do our histories so we talked about ourselves and big events in our lives and then had the kids draw timelines of their lives. It was a good activity because they were about to practice all their skills, writing, reading and speaking since we made them share with the class and we went around and asked individual questions to each student. The timelines varied on the amount of details included depending on the students’ level of English but it was a good way to see their skills, knowledge and learn about them. We asked to put when they were born, siblings birthdays, any pets they had, when they graduated primary school and middle school, as well as any big vacations or other events they could think of. From this we learned Bob had competed in Kung Fu competitions and won several while 19 had lived in New York for 2 years when she was really young. We taught the same lesson for all five classes, having 3 classes and then lunch before teaching the last two. Between each lesson we had a 10-minute break.

After the last lesson, it was chosen course again, we decided to be in the gym from that day on because it was super-hot outside and we didn’t want to die from the heat. We started off playing Sharks and Minnows, then we tried to play some basketball but it turned out to be more challenging than expected because the kids said they knew the rules but they really didn’t. We tried to play knock out but it was a massive failure because no one could really make a basket. Regardless we let them mess around and scrimmage for a while before ending with line tag.

After chosen course it was dinner time again, dinner is only really available from 5 to 5:30 but we have from 5 until 6:25 before evening activities start. On day two of camp it is Alumni night, which is just for the kids to meet previous alumni of the camp and BRS, so with another free evening, we just worked on more lessons, trying to find worksheets and videos that are at a level the kids will be able to understand but not be bored. They also started really working on their talent show performances. Each class is required to do a talent show performance and the music class does a performance as well. The teachers and TA have the options to do a performance too and according to the director they always do. We hadn't planned on doing anything for the talent show but on the day before the show it became clear that the director had expected something from us so we tried to plan a quick song and dance. We decided to sing "What Makes You Beautiful" by One Direction and I was fine with just singing it but at the last minute, the hour before we were meant to go on for rehearsal, the other teachers decided they wanted to add movements and dance moves that were just too coordinated for me to be able to keep up so I ended up dropping out of the dance and not performing with the other teachers. But the talent show performance wasn’t actually until the very last day of camp so I will talk more about that when I get to that day of camp.

Day 4 in China, Day 3 of Camp

Day 3 of camp had morning exercise again but since Catriona and I did the first day other teacher did it that day. After exercises it was classes, for this day we taught a lesson about the colonization of the America, the 13 colonies and the US independence. We had a really good video for the lesson that helped ingrain the ideas and 3 worksheets to keep the pace of the class moving and changing what we were doing kept kids engaged. We ended the class with a word search that was a bit challenging for the kids but helped them with the spelling of various words. We also had the kids make some weird toy that we researched and found to have been used by kids in colonial America, it was just a button on string but since we didn’t have buttons we used paper and had the kids build them. They are called Whirligigs, if you want to look them up or make one, they entertained the kids for a few seconds and it was something a little more fun than worksheets. As the day before we had three classes, lunch then two more classes. Each class is 45 minutes and the time frame was usually pretty good, not too much time but still long enough to get several concepts taught. After our last lesson, we were supposed to have field games but because it was raining we did chosen course again. We warmed up with line tag, the kids really liked that game, even though they cheated sometimes. Our main game/activity was Cross the River we split the class into three groups and gave each group one large yoga mat type thing, they had to use the mat to cross the gym without touching the floor, once they got to one side they were given a second mat and could use that to help get their whole team across. Once they go across once we added in other rules like they could only have 2 feet on a mat at a time or one of their teammates had to pretend to be dead, meaning they couldn’t more or help but still had to be transported across. It was really fun to watch and see what they came up with. They tended to copy each other and follow whichever group figured it out first but sometimes they got creative and tried different and interesting things. After playing that game for a while, we finished class with elbow tag. While elbow tag was a bit rough at the start it was really fun after a while and the kids started to understand a little better. The only problem was when one of the slower kids gets got tagged it was really hard for them to tag anyone else and I usually had to let them tag me so I could be it instead, which was fine but always made me feel bad for the kid. After chosen course it was dinner again and then the kids had a movie night. We were once again free to do whatever and worked on lesson plans again. It wasn't very fun trying to figure out what we could teach and how to make a lesson when we had no idea what we were doing or if our lessons were even helpful but that is all just a part of the experience I suppose.

Day 5 in China, Day 4 of Camp

Another pair of teachers was in charge of the morning exercise and then it was class time again. We taught a lesson on Ancient Egypt and mummies which was fun and the kids knew some of what we were teaching but I think they learned some new information as well. We had them do a crossword puzzle with the vocabulary words and it was interesting because the worksheet didn't print right so we had to do it all together on the screen. It worked out fine in the end but it was unfortunate that they couldn’t each give it a try themselves. Like the days before we had three lessons then lunch and then two more lessons. After the last lesson, we had dumpling making. All the kids and teachers together went to one of the cafeterias and with the help of some of the BRS staff cooks we made hundreds of dumplings, there was a meat version and a veggie version. By the end it got quite wild and some dumplings ended up with both meat and veggie while others ended up with flour on the inside, yum :p . It ultimately turned into a flour fight as the kids put flour on themselves and each other until they began throwing handfuls. It was really fun and everyone including teachers were involved in the chaotic flour fight. I got quite a few of the kids while they certainly got me back, I ended up with flour in my hair and all over my clothes. Once the flour was taken away by the BRS staff we entertained the kids with a group game. We had them split into two groups and form lines facing each other. They had to hold hands and the two kids at the front of the line ahead to watch as a coin was flipped, when it landed on tails they did nothing but when it landed on hands they hand to squeeze the hand of the person next to them and that person had to squeeze the persons hand on the other side of them, the squeeze had to get to the end of the line, when it reached the end of the line the kid at the end of the line had to try and grab a water bottle before the other side. It took a few rounds for everyone understand and few more before they were getting into the game, but by the end everyone was excited and cheering on their teammates to squeeze and get the water bottle first. We spent about an hour and a half making dumplings and playing that game at which point we had to go to dinner. After dinner, the kids worked on their talent show performances again and Catriona and I went to our home room class to help with their performance, a few of the other teachers helped their classes but not everyone did. We had to work on making our lesson for the next day so we did rehearse with our class for as long as they practiced but we helped a little.

Day 6 in China, Day 5 of Camp

Day 5 was the same as the other days with a different pair of teachers doing morning exercise and then class time. We taught a lesson on Indigenous Australia, talking about the religion and creation myth Dreamtime as well as native animals. We played a game that was fun with the younger classes but not as successful with the other kids. The game was called Weme, it is an indigenous game traditionally played with rocks in the dirt, a bit like Bochy ball you roll the rock and try to get as close to a line as possible. We played the game with a line on the tiled floor and an Angry bird stuffed toy. Some of the kids tried throwing the toy, others rolled it and some tried sliding it, it was cool to see the various approaches and how they experimented with various techniques. We also had a drawing game where we had the kids try and draw an Australian animal while their classmates tried to guess what they were drawing. The drawings were hilarious and sometimes took guessing every animal they could think of before it was guessed correctly but it was fun nonetheless and got the kids involved and speaking. After the last lesson, it was field games which was really just a water fight. It was really unorganized and chaotic. The TA had blown up a bunch of water balloons and put them all in one large trash can along with a lot of water, the trash can was then placed in a corner of the field. We also had some water guns but the students didn’t‚ have any way of filling them up other than the water in the trash can, once we said the water fight had started it was just complete chaos as all the kids and teachers tried to get balloons out of the bucket while also trying to fill up water guns. Once a few were successful in getting balloons they were easily able to target the people still trying to get balloons out of the bin but some of the balloons were also thrown and everyone ended up soaked. There was a bit of an incident with Nice as he accidentally throws a balloon at an older boy and ended up hitting him awkwardly in the face and pushing the side of his glasses into his face, the older kid, Nick was very upset and hurt and was yelling at Nice. When I saw them and intervened Nick was shaking Nice while screaming at him in Chinese, Nice was in tears and very upset, I made them both apologize to each other and let it go. however only about 5 minutes later Nice reappeared by my side with a bloody nose and crying again. I was never able to get a full answer out of him as to what happened and though I suspect Nick was involved in the bloody nose, I will never know for sure. The water fight concluded with the TA dumping a lot of buckets of water out a third-floor window onto the unsuspecting kids below. It was a great bonding activity and everyone, or mostly everyone had a great time. Post water fight was a quick shower and then dinner. After dinner, it was finally time for the teachers to be involved in evening activity. We each had to create presentations about our countries to share with the kids. Harry had a presentation about London, Allie and Dan talked solely about Oxford, Pete talked about Wales, Maria talked about Russia, Alex talked about Luxembourg, Catriona and Taylor talked about Ireland and Max and I presented on the USA, focusing on Colorado and Iowa. The presentations were allotted a total of an hour and a half so each person had to talk for 7-8 minutes, Harry however just winged his presentation and in a bid to waste time was going to talk a little longer but ended up speaking for 25 minutes! That meant the rest of our presentations were a little rushed but everyone still got to speak and the kids were able to learn a little about where everyone came from. After the presentations, we helped our class with talent show rehearsal for about 30 minutes and then headed back to our dorms, changed, met up with the other teachers and headed out. We wanted to go to the clubs and see the party scene in Beijing. We thought it would be fairly easy to get into the city, we planned on hailing a taxi but after waiting about 15 minutes with no luck we tried asking the school security guard for help, he was eventually able to help us in getting enough taxis for all 10 of us to get to the city but the taxi drivers didn’t have official taxis and didn’t have meters so we had to negotiate a set price before. They wanted to charge us a lot more than we were willing to pay and almost ended up taking the bus but after about an hour of bargaining and arguing we were able to agree on paying 120 yuan for each taxi which is really cheap considering we split that 3 or 4 ways depending on the number of people in the taxi. Plus, the taxi ride was about an hour so in dollars I only ended up paying about $8 which was nothing for sure a long ride in traffic. When we finally got into the city it was about 12:30 about 3 hours after we had finished talent show rehearsal and left the dorms. We were starving at that point so we went to a sports bar near the clubs, got a bunch of different pizzas and split those, we each got a beer as well and while I was starting to feel a little buzzed after just the one beer no one else felt anything at all so we needed to find another place to go before actually going into a club. We didn't want to go to another place that was expensive like the sports bar, since it was in the club area, so we wandered a little ways out and found a small restaurant where we were able to get beers and some Baijiu (Liquor). We talked, played Never Have I Ever and Most Likely To until everyone was satisfied with their level of tipsy to head to the club. Unfortunately, Catriona overestimated her abilities and was extra drunk when we left the restaurant, she was having trouble not falling over but somehow managed to get into the club. We went to club called Mix and we go in without an entry fee and got free drinks on arrival. We were basically the entertainment for the Asians in the bar, they wanted us to stay and we very interested in just watching us, it was a weird experience to get free drinks and service and a table just because we were white and different from everybody else. I even danced on the stage multiple times with the other girl teachers (no boys allowed) and then some Asian girls too. The club was great until I checked my phone and saw I had gotten a message from a boy back in Colorado telling me he didn’t‚ want to talk to me anymore. Because I was a bit drunk I got quite emotional and was crying, I remember being very sad and getting comforted by the other teachers, I still feel bad about being a bother to the others since they had to try and make me feel better and take care of me instead of having fun, though they insist it wasn't that bad. We ended up leaving Mix not long after I got the text and were planning on going home but Max and I decided to go to another club instead of going home so everyone followed and we went to VICS. There we got even more free drinks and attention, once again we were the entrainment. We didn’t‚ end up staying in VICS very. long and got a taxi back after that but it was about 4:30am at that point. it was an hour taxi ride back so we didn’t‚ up back at the school until 5:30am! We all pretty much passed out when we got to the school and that was that.

Day 7 in China, Day 6 of Camp

I didn’t wake up until about 3pm the next day, we slept the majority of the day away but I didn’t‚ regret it and I still think it was a great night and sleep was worth it. When we all finally got up some of the boys wanted to go into the city and see some of Beijing, I was still tired and didn’t‚ feel like walking around in the heat so I stayed back at the school along with Max and Pete. The three of us walked to KFC and got some food, we worked on lessons, relaxed and got dinner in the village near the school. We got ramen like noodles for dinner that were really good, we also stopped at a fruit store and got some bananas and kiwis. That was pretty much all we did that day, the others ended up coming back around 11 and once they were back we talked about their journey and everyone ended up going to bed, too tired to stay up any later.

Day 8 in China, Day 7 of Camp

On Day 7 we woke up early enough to finish our lesson plan for that day and prepare the activity for class. We taught a lesson on Edo japan and have the kids make origami fortune tellers, cootie catchers, to make sure that they are able to make them successfully and that they write the correct things on the inside we cut and fold and write the inside fortunes on all of the papers before class. It is kind of annoying to have to do but it makes the lesson go much smoother than if we had the kids do it all. We had on class do it themselves and it was a disaster that ended with us doing it for them anyway so definitely better to just have it prepared off the bat. As the other days of lesson, we had 3 45 minute classes then lunch break and two classes after lunch. After the last class, it is talent show rehearsal and Catriona and I stay in our class to help them rehearse and pronounce the words of the song properly. The kids sang All Falls Down and they did really well in practice with pronunciation and energy, we had all of them singing expect for Amy who was doing a dance she learned. 19 left the day before because she didn’t‚ want to perform in the talent show and there was nothing for her to do if she wasn't going to be in the talent show. They practiced for about an hour, the director came by and saw the performance, saying they did a great job. They spent the rest of rehearsal time playing on the computer and messing around, I helped Max and Alex with their classes rehearsal for a bit and then it was dinner time. After dinner was more rehearsal time, since our kids had it down pretty well we didn’t need to go practice with them anymore, we worked on our final lesson plan and then it was time for bed.

Day 9 in China, Day 8 of Camp

The last lesson was on day 8 and we chose to do a lesson on the Black Plague, it was a fairly disgusting and morbid lesson, but interesting and the kids were about to understand the big concepts pretty well. The older classes were able to ask questions and understand the causes and effects while the younger classes focused more on the fact that it was a disease carried by rats and a lot of people died. The lay out of the day was the same as the other lesson days, three classes, lunch, two classes and then we had the last day of chosen course. Instead of having all the kids break up into their different chosen courses we had all the kids come to the gym and we did games with everyone. We played Farmer Sam, and a pairing off game called Sailors which wasn't very successful, then we let the kids do whatever they wanted, some played basketball, other badminton and ping pong, a small group played ninja with the teachers. After the ninja game, it turned into a tickle war with Vera, Shawn, Catriona, Pete, Lily and Me which was very fun and great to see the kids laughing and having fun. At 5pm like always it was dinner time, we ate and then at 6;15 went up to the dance studio where the TA‚ were setting up a party for the kids. They had glow sticks and balloons and music, unfortunately when the kids were brought up to the room they had to walk past the room and were able to see in through the windows so when we jumped up to surprise them it wasn't really much of a surprise. The kids then proceeded to pop all the balloons which was so loud and awful, the music was like loud club music and not many of the kids were into it, the majority choosing to sit on the wall and covering their ears. Not much of an enjoyable party for kids, they should have had games or snacks or something else but it was okay. Some of the kids did have fun and little bob was showing off his ninja skills with flips and handsprings. Nice tried to mimic bob and ended with a massive cut in his lip were his tooth collided and I had to take him to wash it out, his was the injury prone kid of the group without a doubt. As the party began to die down the music speaker actually caught on fire! It was crazy, flames and smoke that put a final end to the party, it was likely. caused by overheating and an extreme amount of wires and cords all plugged into one outlet. While the kids were sent back to their dorms the TA‚ started practicing their talent show performance and the other teachers decided they wanted to do one as well. Thus, beginning the long debate of what song to choose and then practicing the ultimately decided ‚"What Makes You Beautiful". We practiced for quite a while before deeming our singing abilities good enough and heading out. I went for a quick run around the track to try and relieve some of the stress from the hell that was rehearsing with so many conflicting personalities before calling it a night and going to bed.

Day 10 in China, Day 9 of Camp

A full day of just rehearsal seemed easy enough, we slept in a little bit, checked in on the kids and had lunch. After lunch was the on-stage rehearsals and each performance had to go on stage to practice their routine, our kids didn’t‚ do as well on stage as in the class but with some feedback form the other teachers and director they were able to understand what they could do better. The teachers then decided they wanted to add a dance to our performance and the last-minute decision to do so was way too much for me and made me extremely nervous. I didn’t want to go on stage and mess up, I didn’t‚ want to look bad, I didn't want to be unprofessional or embarrassed so I pulled out and let the other teachers do the show without me. I watched the rehearsal performance and as I expected it was chaos, no one was doing the moves at the same time and everyone's singing was off, with some people nothing even singing the right lines. I gave this feedback to the group and tried to help make it more coordinated and better but was just ignored for the most part... While I was talking to some of the TA‚ about my opinions and why I wasn't doing in one of the teachers yelled at me that I wasn't helpful and nothing I was doing was useful, so I got upset and ran off. I ran 12 laps around the track and distressed by laying in the middle of the field until the teacher that yelled at me along with Catriona came and spoke with me. We talked and realized we were both just stressed and it was really just. A miscommunication, no one was really mad at anyone. take others went out for a drink while I stayed back and showered. I was still a bit upset and felt like the others didn’t‚ want me to come out with them since I cried on our club night out. I was a bit extra emotional and called my parents to talk through all my stress and drama. They helped in assuring me that I was likely over reacting and no one hated me or didn’t‚ want me around even though that how I felt. After the extra-long talk with them I was feeling better and went to bed.

Day 11 in China, Day 10 of Camp

The last day of the camp session was just the closing ceremony my and talent show. It started at 9:45am so we were able to sleep in again before going down to the auditorium. The ceremony started a little late with a speak from the director, all in Chinese so I have no clue what he talked about. Then each class was called on stage to receive two certificates each. The first certificate was a certificate of excellence for each student as a completion of the camp and hard work. The second certificate was a n individualized award that we gave to each kid highlighting a specific trait. Without 19 and Douglas, who went home early we only had six kids left to give awards to. For our excellence awards we gave a small speech, Catriona and I alternated each saying a few sentences while our TA William translated after each of us spoke.

After our class was presented their awards the other classes got their awards. Then it was talent show time. The first performance was the music chosen course that performed the song ‚"Love Story" by Taylor Swift, next was our class performance with the song and dance, they did very good even though they were obviously nervous. Class two had one song and dance performance and a dance performance with one of the kids playing drums, class three had a dance and song, Class four and five combined together to. do a K-Pop style dance that was very impressive and amazingly well done. Then the teachers did their performance and the show finished with the TAs performance. We took a few pictures with some of the kids and the TAs which was great then had about 30 minutes to get our things ready for a night away at the Great Wall!
