China

Updated: Oct 4, 2019

China was different from anything I had ever experienced before, it was so unexpected and I had no expectations, no clue what would happen. I’m glad I was placed at an amazing school with lots of resources and close proximity to the Beijing City center. I also got incredibly lucky by being placed with a great group of teachers who also had no clue what to expect. We were able to navigate the confusing mystery that is China for a whole 7 weeks together and made unforgettable memories.

While in China I taught at 3 seperate camp sessions, each lasting 10 days, between each session we had days off to travel. The first session was the most confusing yet most eye opening part of the trip; as participants in the the program I and some of the other teachers had thought that we would we learning how to learn by following a head teacher or some kind of instructional material. The reality was that we were paired up and designated a subject to teach based on our majors, I ended up teaching history, while we knew very little about teaching we all tried our hardest to teach and to create a fun learning environment. While we received no real feedback on any of the classes we taught, I don't believe our students learned much and I am disappointed in the lack of instruction and education I was given through the program.

I tried to write while in China but admittedly didn't do a very good job at that, I did however write quite a bit about the first session of camp so I am going to post a part of the writing I did while a part of the way through the TEFL program. The writing is a bit long and not super interesting so if you do want to read it click here, otherwise enjoy my pictures!
